È per me un onore che l’International Theatre Institute ITI dell’Unesco mi abbia chiesto di scrivere questo messaggio per il cinquantesimo anniversario della Giornata Mondiale del Teatro.

Dedico queste mie brevi parole ai miei colleghi, ai lavoratori del mondo del teatro, miei pari e miei compagni.

Che il vostro lavoro sia avvincente e originale. Che sia profondo, toccante, contemplativo, unico.

Possa il vostro lavoro aiutarci a pensare, aiutarci a domandare che cosa significhi essere umani, e che questo pensiero possa essere sostenuto col cuore, con la sincerità, con il candore e con la grazia.

Che possiate superare le avversità, la censura, la povertà e il nichilismo, che molti di voi sicuramente saranno costretti ad affrontare.

Possiate godere di talento e di rigore, per insegnarci il battito del cuore umano in tutta la sua complessità, con l’umiltà e la curiosità necessarie per rendere tutto questo il lavoro della vostra vita. Possa il meglio di voi – poiché sarà solo il meglio di voi, anche se solo per un attimo – riuscire a formulare la più essenziale delle domande: «come viviamo?».

I'm honored to have been asked by the International Theatre Institute ITI at UNESCO to give this greeting commemorating the 50th anniversary of World Theatre Day. I will address my brief remarks to my fellow theatre workers, peers and comrades.

May your work be compelling and original. May it be profound, touching, contemplative, and unique. May it help us to reflect on the question of what it means to be human, and may that reflection be blessed with heart, sincerity, candor, and grace. May you overcome adversity, censorship, poverty and nihilism, as many of you will most certainly be obliged to do. May you be blessed with the talent and rigor to teach us about the beating of the human heart in all its complexity, and the humility and curiosity to make it your life's work. And may the best of you - for it will only be the best of you, and even then only in the rarest and briefest moments - succeed in framing that most basic of questions, "how do we live?" Godspeed.

Nota biografica
Attore, produttore, sceneggiatore e regista statunitense, John Malkovich è innanzitutto un artista di teatro.
Dopo aver scoperto il teatro agli inizi degli anni 70 (all’Illinois State University), nel 1976 fonda la famosa Steppenwolf Theater Company con Terry Kinney, Jeff Perry e Gary Sinise.
Diviene celebre nel cinema interpretando Valmont in Dangerous Liaisons di Stephen Frears, accanto a Michelle Pfeiffer e Glenn Close. In seguito a questo ruolo, che segna una tappa significativa nella sua carriera, recita in più di settanta film negli Stati Uniti e all’estero.
Interpretando un ampio spettro di ruoli, viene nominato due volte all’Oscar come miglior attore non-protagonista per Places in the Heart (1984) e In the line of fire (1993), e ottiene premi per le sue interpretazioni in film come Killing Fields, The Dangerous Liaisons, Being John Malkovich e Changeling.
Nel 2011 ha diretto la sua terza produzione teatrale a Parigi, Les Liaisons Dangeureuses al Théâtre de l’Atélier, dopo il successo di Hysteria (Marigny, 2002) e Good Canary (Comedia, 2007), per il quale gli è stato conferito il premio Molière per la migliore messa in scena.
